The 2016 Summer Olympics are just around the corner, and Rio de Janeiro has been busy getting ready for the grand event. Making sure to not overlook a single detail, the Rio design team has developed a set of gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as participation medals, which beautifully illustrate Brazil’s dedicated to sustainability by constructing the said medals from recycled electronic equipment.

Working exclusively with the Brazilian Mint, the Rio 2016 design team has commissioned the establishment to produce over 75,000 participation medals and 5,000 award medals.

“The medals are one of the most important symbols of the games and we are very pleased that we can count on the Brazilian Mint as our partner in this unique moment in history of the Brazilian sport.”

-Carlos Nuzman, Rio 2016 President

This is not the first time the Brazilian Mint has had the opportunity to design and produce medals of this magnitude. The Brazilian Mint oversaw the production of medals for the 2011 World Military Games and 2007 Pan-American Games, both of which were held in Rio de Janeiro.

To date, images of the official medal designs have yet to be released.
