$2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle

The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is also known as a Coronet. It was minted from 1840 to 1907 without major changes. Some of the most sought-after coins of this series are the 1841, the 1863, and the ultra-rare 1854-S and 1875. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original 13 U.S. colonies. The 1848 CAL. Quarter Eagle was produced at the Philadelphia Mint from one of the earliest shipments from the California Gold Rush. Fewer than 300 coins from this first official U.S. commemorative coin survive today. An 1878 Coronet sold at auction in 2006 for $1,500.
