Monday marks a historic moment in college football history. Not only is it the first college football playoff championship, but the Oregon Ducks could be crowned national champs for the very first time! In addition to fame and glory, the winning school will be awarded the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy. If they ever considered selling it, how much money do you think they would they get for it?
When evaluating how much the trophy is worth, the first consideration is what it’s made of. Weighing in at 35 pounds, the top half of the statue is made of 24-karat gold, bronze, and stainless steel. This unique trophy’s design includes a detachable base. Made of solid bronze, the base weighs 30 pounds. So let’s make a conservative estimate, and say the 35-pound upper half of the statue used one pound of 24-karat gold. With gold currently hovering around $1,200 an ounce, one troy pound of gold comes in at a whopping $14,400.00. Even if the statue only contains half a pound of gold, it still means its value in gold is $7,200. But the trophy’s worth in gold is by no means the only factor in determining its true value.
The second, and arguably more powerful, factor when it comes to the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy’s value is a fan’s devotion to their team. Fans will pay unbelievable amounts of money for sports memorabilia. And we all know how college football fans can get. Case in point: In Alabama, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Championship Trophy sold for $100,000 at an auction—even though it was broken.
This crystal trophy goes to the coach of the national championship team. In perfect condition, it’s worth $30,000. A shattered crystal statue’s value is based on what someone will pay for it. And it appears that some fans will pay big bucks to get their hands on anything that has to do with their team’s victory.
So what would we pay for the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy? Well, with the statue’s weight, precious metal content, and priceless sentimental value to Ducks fans, we’d estimate the baseline value of the statue at $100,000. That said, you can’t put a price on victory.
