For nearly two weeks the documents that have been nicknamed the “Magna Carta” of baseball were the focus of a major bid war.

SCP auctions in Southern California closed the sale of the documents on Sunday, April 24, to an anonymous buyer for a whopping $3.3 million. Prior to placing the “Laws of Base Ball” for sale, the auction house anticipated a closing price of over $1 million, making the fine deal a bit more jovial than hoped.

The former owner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, purchased the set of laws in 1999 for $12,000. When he set forth to sell the papers, the auction house appraised them for significantly higher, much to everyone’s amazement.

It should go without saying, there are many experiencing elation with the purchase of this cherish piece of American history.
