In June of 2015, the United States Treasury announced that a woman would once again grace the face of legal tender, only this time, she would be replacing a male figure. The decision as to who that woman would be was to be officially declared by the end of the year, however, the decision has been delayed until 2016, leaving as much speculation as to whom the important female figure will be than ever.
Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew has stated that the public’s input has been of great value to him in his decision making process; citing the input as creating more worthy candidates than originally thought and adding to the delay.
There have been a number of women who have made a tremendous impact and helped shape the history of the United States. Martha Washington, for a period of time, had her portrait on the face of the $1 USD silver certificate. Sacagawea and her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, were honored with the obverse of the 2000 $1 coin and of course, the woman who was one of the greatest influences on women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony, was granted her own dollar coin in 1979 and again in 1999.
Much speculation has built as the anticipation grows as to who will be peering back from the face of the new $10. Which woman will be determined the worthy candidate to replace Alexander Hamilton? Will it be Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, or Elizabeth Cady Stanton, amongst others, to be named the elected figured?
The appointed figure will be announced in 2016, but the unveil of the new note will not be until 2020, the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, in which women won the right to vote alongside their male counterparts. The new notes will promptly be placed into circulation.
