What is a coin club exactly and how does one join? Is there extensive criteria to become a member of a club or do they except entry level numismatists? We did a little research and hope you will find the following information about coins clubs in the Pacific Northwest to be of help!
Coin clubs are non-profit organizations in which the participants seek to relay educational and historic numismatic information to one another. While there are no formal criteria for joining or attending coin club meetings, there are standards set in place by the United States Mint regulating coin clubs around the nation. Those standards are as follows:
- “Be a non-profit organization that supports numismatics and the hobby of coin collecting. Membership in the organization must also be open to all individuals without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, parental status, or sexual orientation;
- Have educational materials related to the history of coins and currency which are accessible to the public; and
- The United States Mint will not allow hyperlinks to any organization or website that exhibits hate, bias, discrimination, or which contains information or hyperlinks associated with partisan political activity. This includes any organization that participates in lobbying. Further, the United States Mint reserves the right to deny or remove any link that has misleading information, unsubstantiated claims, inappropriate content, or is determined to be in conflict with the United States Mint’s missions or policies. “
The Willamette Coin Club is one of the oldest in the Portland area, founded in 1986 by a group of coin lovers. The Willamette Coin Club holds monthly meetings every third Thursday at 7 pm. They welcome all individuals, from novice to expert, to partake in their gatherings of buying/selling/swapping collectible coins and also as the proud hosts of the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association Coin Show, which are held annually in Portland.
