First released in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle serves as this country’s official platinum bullion coin. The American Platinum Eagle comes in four denominations: the 1/10, ¼, ½, and 1-troy-ounce coins. Each coin consists of .9995 fine platinum and comes backed by the United States Mint for weight and content. Collectors can also find proof and uncirculated versions of these coins as well. The proof of the 1-troy-ounce coin is known for featuring a different reverse design.
From 1998 through 2002, the reverse designs feature a bald eagle in different parts of the United States. From 2006 through 2008, the design featured the three branches of the U.S. government. In 2009, the U.S. embarked on a six-year plan to illustrate the core concepts of American democracy as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
