Produced by the Perth Mint, a branch of the British Royal Mint meant to manufacture British Sovereigns in Western Australia, the Gold Kangaroo (originally called the Australian Gold Nugget) once showcased the well-known gold nugget found in Australia in 1869 on the reverse side. Updates to the coin in 1989 replaced the nugget with the well-loved Australian kangaroo. The obverse side portrays Queen Elizabeth II of England. The annually updated design makes each year’s version a limited edition collectable and rarity in the gold coin market.
