The Royal Canadian Mint began producing Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins in the late 1970s. These coins became the first popular bullion coin produced from pure gold in North or South America. The obverse side depicts Queen Elizabeth II while the reverse design employs a maple leaf theme. Demand for this bullion coin has increased in recent years (particularly in the Northwest) due to the appeal of the design and the coin’s beautiful natural color. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin comes in denominations of 1/10 ounce ($5), 1/4 ounce ($10), 1/2 ounce ($25), and 1 ounce ($50).
