20-Cent Pieces

Authorized on March 3, 1875, this coin only lasted three years, due in large part to the general public’s confusion over its resemblance to the better-known quarter dollar. In the first year, the government minted more than a million pieces. But this number dropped significantly the next year. In fact only proof specimens were struck in 1877 and 1878. None were released for distribution.
